Transforming the Energy Landscape with Ammonia
The world needs energy. Clean, secure and accessible energy to power lives, economies and communities.
Energy comes in many forms such as fossil fuels, water, wind, ammonia. Ammonia can help revolutionise the energy sector and play a crucial role in enabling the global energy transition.
To scale its use, there are challenges we must address. Ammonia emits only nitrogen and water when burned. But manufacturing capacity is limited, and current production methods are energy and carbon intensive.
As the demand for ammonia increases, BW can support both the sustainable supply of ammonia, and its safe transportation.
BW can offer innovative solutions which are competitive, low-risk and rapidly deployable, and scale the clean production, storage and delivery of ammonia to support global decarbonisation ambitions.
Leveraging over 90 years of experience
Combined competence along the entire energy value chain
At BW Group, we leverage over 90 years of experience in the energy value chain. Our combined competence spans shipping, floating gas infrastructure, and offshore production capabilities; and we can offer customers a unique end-to-end partnership in the ammonia space.
We can work with stakeholders in ammonia production and export projects and provide carbon sequestration solutions.
Ammonia Production and Transportation
We can support the supply of low-carbon blue and zero-carbon green ammonia onshore, nearshore and offshore, as well as manage the transportation and storage of emissions from its production
Emissions Management and Storage
Emissions captured from blue ammonia production processes can be liquefied, stored, and transferred to specialised gas vessels, which then sail to injection facilities.
Clean Hydrogen and Ammonia Production
Expanding our presence in production
We can support the supply of low-carbon blue and zero-carbon green ammonia onshore, nearshore and offshore; as well as manage the transportation and storage of emissions from its production.
Onshore, we are expanding our presence in clean hydrogen, ammonia production and bunkering facilities. Nearshore and offshore, we can offer safe, rapidly deployable and flexible Floating Production Storage and Offloading Units or FPSOs for both blue and green ammonia production.
Blue ammonia FPSOs can be positioned close to natural gas supplies and CO2 storage reservoirs, while green ammonia FPSOs can take advantage of almost limitless wind and wave energy offshore.
Managing emissions from the production process
BW can offer floating floating CO2 injection facilities
Emissions captured from blue ammonia production processes can be liquefied, stored, and transferred to specialised gas vessels, which then sail to storage or injection facilities.
With our combination of shipping and offshore competencies, we offer customers safe and cost-efficient end-to-end carbon sequestration solutions. We can simplify and de-risk our customers’ CO2 emissions management process, by supporting the shipping and storage of LCO2 as part of overall efforts to decarbonise.
BW has over four decades of experience in operating advanced offshore production systems and executing complex projects. We can offer floating injection facilities as a flexible and cost-effective alternative to fixed infrastructure. They can be deployed and redeployed where there is no existing pipeline, which reduces capital expenditure and shortens lead time. They will also incorporate buffer storage to smooth out intermittent shipping flow and simplify reservoir management.
Transporting ammonia to world markets
With the world’s largest gas fleet
Ammonia can also be offloaded directly for export to markets worldwide, with no need for significant investments in additional infrastructure.
As we boost the supply of blue and green ammonia, we can connect global supply and demand centres. We own and operate the world’s largest gas fleet. Many of these vessels are involved in ammonia transportation or are ammonia ready or capable.
We are building the world’s first ammonia bunkering network. We are also investing in R&D that will pave the way for pioneering ammonia propulsion of vessels to support industry decarbonisation.
Hafnia
Hafnia is a world-leading tanker shipping company, operating over 200 vessels, and transporting energy sources worldwide. The Company has over 130 owned, newbuilds and Chartered-in vessels (inclusive of 4 dual-fuel LNGs and four dual-fuel methanol chemical MR newbuilds), over 200 vessels under commercial management and has major ventures in the US looking ahead into the production and transportation of clean energy.
Navigator Gas
Navigator Gas plays a vital role in the global liquefied gas supply chain, providing gas transportation solutions for energy companies, industrial users and commodity traders. The Company’s specialised gas carriers are some of the most complex oceangoing vessels to operate, and are capable of carrying LPG, Petrochemicals and Ammonia at ambient and refrigerated temperatures. These vessels often change from one cargo grade to another meeting the needs of customers.
BW Epic Kosan
Ammonia has been identified as one of the leading potential zero emission fuels. However, ammonia-powered vessels present a number of challenges from the technical, safety, fuel supply and commercial viability fronts. The Nordic Green Ammonia Powered Ships (NoGAPS) project aims to pave the way for ammonia-powered vessels first in the Nordic region, and globally. BW Epic Kosan has been a strong supporter of the NoGAPS project since it began in 2020.
BW Offshore
BW Offshore is committed to contributing to the energy transition by developing low-carbon offshore energy production solutions. We apply four decades of experience in the energy sector, and together with extensive innovation and financing capabilities, develop floating energy solutions and offshore renewable power production at industrial scale.
